Established as a University in 1994, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has been ranked 57th in the latest QS World University Rankings. CityU is now positioned among the top 100 universities along with three other universities in Hong Kong. In fact, CityU was ranked 1st in Hong Kong in terms of the number of citations per faculty member, QS revealed, highlighting the quality of its faculty. According to QS, research conducted by CityU faculty has made a significant impact on a global scale. Our curricula are designed to promote knowledge creation, original discoveries and innovative thinking by integrating learning and research on all levels of our professional education.
The Department of Biomedical Sciences was established by the University in January 2014 to develop strategic growth areas of life sciences. We aim to become one of the leading centres in the Asia Pacific region specializing in biomedical education and cutting-edge research in targeted areas of biomedical sciences. For education, the Department provides professional programmes that best equip graduates for future careers in biomedical research, healthcare industry, pharmaceutical and biotech industry. The Department carries out internationally competitive and cutting edge research in biomedical sciences, promotes inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary collaborations, and facilitates the translation of basic research to industries. Our research focus/expertise of the current faculties in the Department include: (1) Cancer Biology; (2) Regenerative Medicine; (3) Neuroscience; and (4) Nanomedicine.
Our PhD program is student-centred and led by faculty who are accessible, engaged and committed to ensuring that our postgraduate students reach their full potential in research, teaching and professional development. The Department has a number of scholarships to support postgraduate studies towards PhD degree.
1. Research Degree studies: 3 years, HKD180,000 stipend + HKD10,000 conference grant per year
2. Hong Kong PhD Scheme: 3 years, 240,000 HKD per year + HKD10,000 conference grant per year
Free accommodation in the first year.
3. Interdisciplinary PhD program in Veterinary Sciences: 3 years, HKD180,000 stipend + HKD10,000 conference grant per year including up to 1-year visit at Cornell University in New York, USA (CityU will cover the travelling cost and provide 500 USD extra stipend per month for this trip).
Students are also provided subsidized medical insurance and housing. For awardees needing more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided.
Outstanding students with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (minimum GPA: 8/10, minimum IELTS score: 6.5 or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, engineering, and medicine (including veterinary medicine) who wish to conduct state-of-the-art basic and translational life sciences research are encouraged to apply.
