2 PHD POSITIONS

Research Group: Dr. Marc Stemmler
The research group of Dr. Marc Stemmler in the Department of Molecular Embryology at the Max-Planck Institute of Immunobiology is offering
2 PhD positions
within the Collaborative Research Center 850 (Control of Cell Motility in Morphogenesis, Cancer Invasion and Metastasis - SFB850). The positions are immediately available with initial contract for 2 years and the possibility of extension.
In our research projects we are analyzing molecular differences of classical cadherins. Switching in cadherin expression often correlates with important morphogenic events during development accompanied by changes in cell shape and migration. An aberrant cadherin switch is frequently observed during tumor progression, but not much is known about the molecular consequences of this event in comparison to a complete EMT. By using mouse models and in vitro cell culture systems we are able to analyze the effects of the cadherin switch on cell migration, signal transduction and gene expression during development and cancer.
Candidates must hold a diploma/master degree in biology, biochemistry or a closely related field and should have a solid background in molecular, cellular and developmental biology. Additional experience in mouse genetics is a plus. We offer a modern and challenging scientific environment with internationally highly competitive projects.
Salaries will be based on TVöD guidelines. A childcare facility is directly attached to the MPI of Immunobiology. Handicapped applicants with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in areas, where they are underrepresented, and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
Candidates should send their application indicating the reference number 010110 via e-mail to

Research Group: Dr. Tanja Ninkovic
Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology
International Summer Internships 2010

Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology offers you a unique chance to spend 3 months in our labs working as an internship student (June-September 2010).
We are interested in excellent international students with strong motivation to be scientists.
You should be in your 3rd or 4th year of studies and be interested in Molecular and Cellular biology, Immunology, Epigenetics and Developmental biology.
During your internship, you will work on your own project as a part of the research group. You will get help and intensive mentoring for the practical laboratory work. You will also participate in seminars and present papers in journal clubs and give regular progress reports in front of the lab and the department.
You will learn the state-of-the art techniques, experience the way world leading scientists work, train you language skills and create contacts for your future career.
Participation in our Internship program will be a great asset when you apply for future positions.
We will provide you with accommodation in our guesthouse and financial support for living expenses. We also organize English and German language course at the institute. You will have the opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful parts of central Europe, travelling with other summer internship students to Switzerland, France, Italy and around Germany.
The Max-Planck Institute of Immunobiology is dedicated to basic research with over 150 scientists including Ph.D. students. Information on the research activities can be obtained from the web page of the institute www.immunbio.mpg.de.
